Props and Themes: Creative Storytelling in Newborn Photography

At Bella Baby Photography, we believe that every photograph tells a story. To push the boundaries of creativity and artistry, we’re excited to announce a new project that challenges our veteran photographers to create a cohesive gallery using thoughtfully selected themes and props. This challenge is designed to inspire fresh perspectives and encourage intentional, creative storytelling in every frame. Our goal?  To capture the magic of newborns in a way that showcases the beauty, emotion, and uniqueness of every moment. We are excited to share some of the work from the photographers who made up the first class of this exciting challenge.

This quarter, photographers in the cohort voted on a variety of themes and challenges. They selected “props” as the focus element by majority vote. We asked our photographers to share a little bit about their images.

Read their stories

Starting a new chapter

Kate Fowler of Illinois, shared this story about sweet little Vaughan: It was a nice day outside, but this side of the hospital has cars right there, so I decided to do this shot in the corner. Parents always work so hard on those signs, I like to include them when I can. The hardest part of this shot is squaring everything off, but the geometry of the end result is nice. I like that it shows off the room a little bit, since they spend so much time there, it’s the first chapter of their story with their fresh baby.”

Just “lion” around

“This little guy was taking a nap during his photo session. Mom and Dad said his nursery is ready for his homecoming, the theme is “Lion.” Step aside Simba there is a new baby cub coming home! The love in this room was magical,” says Marjie Jones of Arizona.

A wizard in the making

Janet Amis of Illinois shared that little Timothy wasn’t too happy about his photoshoot, but after a few tries they were able to make the shot. Here’s more from Janet: “By the end he was pretty calm and dad brought out the Harry Potter gear explaining that mom was a huge fan. Dad dressed Timothy and the screaming started again, so I wrapped him in a hospital sheet and rocked him for a while. Rather than unwrapping him or disturbing him once he was calm and secure in the sheet, I tucked the scarf in and arranged it so it looked like it was wrapped in around his neck, and got some shots of him with the whole regalia. It was a rough room, but I was glad I got to make mom really happy with the costume she brought.”

From favorite characters to signs & balloons our photographers love to include the pieces of your story that make your family unique. By focusing on creative storytelling, this challenge encourages our team to go beyond the expected, crafting photos that capture the essence of each family in meaningful and imaginative ways. Training Manager Amber Ingraham is excited about this new initiative and hopes it will “inspire everyone in the process – both the photographers and those who are viewing their work.” Stay tuned each quarter as we dive into this exciting new journey at Bella Baby.
